This is my view, from my foxhole.  Everybody has their own war…  Take what you need — leave the rest.  And, most importantly, I reserve the right to change and evolve my opinions over time…  That's what good conversations do — blogs, inherently, are conversations.

Working for free…  We've all done it.  Most freelancers will have regretted it at some stage.  Yet, the allure of the E-word — 'exposure', has seduced many a talented artist, musician, or designer into giving away their services for zero financial compensation; as illustrated beautifully (and swearily) in this classic viral cartoon by The Oatmeal.

If you're making art for art's sake, a little exposure can go a long way.  But, if you're trying to make a living and valuing your own service, you're going to have to stand up for yourself every now and then.

Owing to the rise of social media, an alternative but increasingly effective way of gaining legitimate exposure is to publicly name and shame large companies who seek to take advantage of freelancers.  No matter whether you're struggling or flourishing, as a freelancer you're always going to get asked to do things for free.  Here are a few who have had enough, and have fruitfully decided to take their grievances to the Web.

Are freelancer exchanges viable when your goal is mutually beneficial partnerships with clients willing to pay a fair amount per project?

When it comes to finding and winning clients as a freelancer, there isn't much that I haven't tried…  I graduated the school of hard-knocks with several scars and the odd badge of merit.  So, when it comes to giving advice to freelancers who were maybe where I was several years ago, I speak from a position of experience.

The type of hair-pull—face-palm—head-in-sand experience that you can only get from a good few years trying, failing and winning, to get something to work.

So, I was at the above-mentioned Tim Hortons earlier today.  I'd spent at least $30 alone (on just myself) at this Tim Hortons this morning; within an hour or less of being there.  I was relaxing, using the LCBO's Internet, and drinking cofee while waiting for the library up the road the open at noon.
